TAG Heuer is synonymous with the racetrack, and Jack Heuer's legendary racing-inspired chronographs have always been popular. Following the 1963 Carrera Chronograph, in 1969, Heuer launched a bold square chronograph with a blue dial and a crown on the left, named after the Monaco Grand Prix. In 1971, Steve McQueen wore the Monaco in the classic movie Le Mans, which became a timeless classic. For 55 years, the Monaco has continued to adapt to watch trends with new materials and technologies. The latest Monaco made a brief stop in Las Vegas, showing off its engine charm with a skeletonized dial and bright pink decoration inspired by the neon lights of the Las Vegas Strip.

Throughout its long lifespan, the Monaco series has always featured closed dials, but there have been exceptions, such as the carbon fiber watch created for Only Watch 2021. In 2023, we reported on the first non-limited edition Monaco Skeleton Chronograph, which featured a more modern skeletonized dial, followed by the Monaco Skeleton Dark Blue model launched earlier this year.

The new Monaco Skeleton watch features a 39mm black sandblasted DLC-coated titanium case with a thickness of 15.2mm, a lug-to-lug distance of 47.4mm, and a water-resistance of 100 meters. The lightweight titanium is sleek and stealthy, ensuring a comfortable fit on the wrist, and the matte black case visually reduces its size. Classic features such as the beveled sapphire crystal on the dial and the slender chronograph pushers on the right are retained.

The dial plays with shapes in a clever way, with a circular minute track on a black square base, and white markers and bold hour markers that extend to the edge of the dial. Further features of this model include the prominent black elongated hour markers, which double as bridges for the subdials, date arrows and applique logo.

Against the black background, the hour markers stand out with a bright pink luminescent material that glows a light blue in the dark. Although they are white in daylight, the black gilt faceted hour and minute hands are also treated with light blue luminescent SLN. Two square counters are placed horizontally - a 30-minute totalizer at 3 o'clock and a 12-hour totalizer at 9 o'clock - and are anchored by slim pink hour markers on either side.

The outer ring of the square subdials is a bright pink opaline and is indicated by a pink lacquered hand that matches the color of the central chronograph seconds hand. The numbers within the subdials are arranged in a linear rather than circular pattern, emphasizing the square feel of the Monaco. The horizontal bar connecting the 5 and 7 o'clock hour markers features a small pink arrow pointing to the date at the bottom of the dial. A similar structure at noon is printed with the watch name and the TAG Heuer shield. The small seconds are indicated by a black hand above the pink date arrow, but it is indeed difficult to see.

Perhaps the most eye-catching movement component on the dial is the skeletonized date wheel. A window on the caseback reveals the black skeletonized rotor with pink inscriptions, the bridges with Geneva stripes, and, more importantly, the column wheel mechanism of the chronograph movement is presented in bright pink. The movement is driven by the integrated automatic movement Heuer 02, which runs at 4Hz and provides a strong power reserve of 80 hours.
